The Mikado
Or
The Town of Titipu.
RCMPI presents its fifth Gilbert and Sullivan production.
A wandering minstrel falls in love with a village school girl but suffers
from the jealousy of a local bureaucrat. The bureaucrat has problems
of his own as he has been appointed as the town executioner with the
explicit instruction that the first person he executes must be himself.
The town officials who, for efficiency, are all the same person, are much
more concerned about following the letter of the Mikado's laws than the
intent and things come to a head when the Mikado shows up looking for
evidence that someone has been executed......
The Mikado is probably the best known musical
from the Gilbert and Sullivan partnership and was their last smash hit. This comical musical
is set in Japan, but it lampoons the British civil service, class structure
and bureaucratic red tape. The
popular music, comedy and characters combine to make a show that will be
enjoyed by all ages.
