The King and I
by Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein II
It is a story of love, intrigue and a clash of cultures. Set in 1862,
when the American civil War was raising questions about slavery all over
the world, The King and I tells the story of the English teacher who
challenges the King's 'ownership' of his wives and concubines. A dance
version of Uncle Tom's Cabin, the ultimate anti-slavery story, is the
highlight of the second act.
